Here are some breif notes on how to install the SEARCH server:
First of all, this server causes a lot of hard disk I/O that lasts at
least 20 minutes per search. This program should not be run on an XT or 286
and it is a question where it is anywhere near practical to run this on a
high performance machine. Also this program HAS to be run in a multi-tasking
environment. It runs in DesqView and I see no reason why it won't run in
Windows (I think that the trick will be getting FBB to run in Windows
without crashing).
The SEARCH server accesses the \FBB\REQHB.CFG file so no other configuration
is needed for the program itself. You will need to add SEARCH in your BBS.SYS
and then add the following entry in your FORWARD.SYS:
A SEARCH
P @
C C:\FBB\SEARCH.IN
B SEARCH
F SEARCH
F FIND
---------
Now messages addressed to SEARCH or FIND will be put into a file for the
server to use every forwarding cycle.
Now open a DesqView window and run SEARCH at the DOS prompt. After it is
started use the rearrange option and hide the window running SEARCH and forget
about it.
To use Seach send a personal message to FIND or SEARCH. The subject will be
the name you want found, or the subject could be a zipcode if you wanted to
look up who is in a certain town. The text of the message should be blank.
Then end with the control-Z.
The server checks about every 5 minutes to see if it has something to do and
starts the process if it finds work.
Again, this causes A LOT of disk activity. You might want to try this once to
see what the server does and then take it off line. Until j-Com finds a way
to make the mapping of other data as efficient as the callsigns, this server
is impractical to run all the time.
After it is done it will create a reply and the BBS will then import it.
-----------------------------Conclusion-------------------------------------
Once again the standard disclaimers and credits, etc...
1. This software is freeware to the amateur community. It may not be sold.
It may be freely copied and distributed, but at no charge exceeding the
medium and shipping.
2. No warranty is expressed or implied and incidental damages resulting from
the use of this software are solely the responsibility of the user. While
the software works fine, and I am willing to give it to the amateur
community, I am not willing to assume any liabilty for it crashing your
computer or its peripherals. (It has not done that on any machine we have
run it on...this is just legal junk to prevent someone from holding me
responsible for being generous enough to give this server away as a
service to the FBB community.)
3. Feedback on desired features, bugs, etc. are encouraged.
4. I would like to thank N0AN and K0CQ for their encouragement, ideas for
improvements and for testing my multiple versions of this program.
Good luck and 73,
Dean - KE0WO
